Jeffrey Lord to Newsmax TV: Is Congress' Slush Fund Criminal?

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

Political commentator Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV on Thursday if President Donald Trump is under fire for hush money payments made to women, several members of Congress should be, too.

During an appearance on "America Talks Live," Lord alluded to the congressional fund that has paid out at least $17 million in settlements since it was set up in the 1990s. People who accused members of Congress of harassment, which includes sexual harassment, were recipients of the money.

"We now realize that Congress itself in the House of Representatives had a $17 million slush fund to pay sexual harassment charges against various congressional staffers who charged members of Congress with this," Lord said.

"And there were nondisclosure agreements involved. In other words, members of Congress not only did what Donald Trump did with private money, they did it with taxpayer money. And they're saying what he did is a felony? We could be sending half of Congress to jail if they really believe what they're saying."

Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison this week on tax evasion and other charges. He paid two women who said they had affairs with Trump in order for the stories to stay out of the news during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Democrats have accused Trump of campaign finance violations because of the payments, which Trump denied.

"Most assuredly, the leadership of Congress knew it . . . So, the question is, are we going to press for an indictment of Nancy Pelosi and, for that matter, I guess Speaker Ryan? Of course not," Lord said. "This is ridiculous. This is what happens when you do political prosecutions."
