Al D'Amato: Dems in 'Hateful Politics' Play Against Kavanaugh

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

Former Sen. D'Amato, R-N.Y., told Newsmax TV he believes Democratic lawmakers are trying to drum up fear and anxiety that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will attempt to squash women's rights.

"You're in political high tide now . . . the Democrats are looking to create fear; it's political warfare," D'Amato told Tuesday's "America Talks Live."

But that is not at all the case, insisted D'Amato, who called Kavanaugh a "man of ability a man of great integrity," who is not a kneejerk right-winger gunning to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

"He is not going to simply going to jump on any bandwagon one way or the other," D'Amato said. "If a case comes before him, he will look with the constitutional guidelines that he has employed in his legal career.

"He has an outstanding record and one that you cannot simply say that this is a right-wing fanatic who's going to take away the rights of women and others and endanger others."

D'Amato said he is confident Republican moderates, Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, will vote to approve Kavanaugh as well as "two, possibly three Democrats."

"I believe he will pass, and by the way, when he was confirmed for the Court of Appeals, the second highest court in Washington, he was confirmed 57-36," said D'Amato, who served in the Senate from 1981 to 1999.

"So, people who are now claiming that somehow he's going to undermine democracy, he's going to cut away the very fabric of protections that the Constitution has provided, they are just being extremists . . . it's pure hateful politics."
