Brad Meltzer: Rose Garden Holds Deadly Secret in My New Thriller

Brad Meltzer has delivered another crackling thriller that begins with a grisly find in the White House Rose Garden.

And the bestselling novelist tells Newsmax TV that the Secret Service actually helped him with the plot of his page-turning storyline.

"When I've met first ladies in the past, they just want one thing: normalcy. So I have this first lady in the White House Rose Garden. It's 5 a.m. No one's bothering her for once," Meltzer said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"She puts her hands in the dirt and she smells the mulch — and out of the dirt she pulls a severed arm. Not good! She doesn't know how it got there, doesn't know how it got past security … That's where 'The President's Shadow' opens."

Inside the closed fist of the severed arm is a note that could have terrible consequences for the presidency and have repercussions for the entire nation.

Meltzer, to figure out how to further advance his story past the initial jolt, then grilled a friend of his on Secret Service detail.

"I said, 'What would you do next if you were investigating this?' and he said to me, and — this is true — he said, 'I'd renovate a room.' I said, 'what do you mean renovate a room?''' Meltzer said.

"He said … because if I do, I can get the first family out of the White House, none of the press would know, I can do my investigation in peace and no one would be the wiser.' And I said 'it sounds like you've done that before.'

"He said 'Clinton's renovated a room, Bush has, Obama has, you won't believe what's been done here in the name of home renovation.' I said 'thank you for chapters two, three and four.'''

Does that imply that some of the nation's commanders-in-chief have sinister, real-life secrets stashed around the White House?

"Sometimes renovation is just a renovation, but the point is, sometimes it's not … I could detect the inference that not everything you see when you take the first family out of the White House is what you think it is," Meltzer said.

"The President's Shadow,"
published by Grand Central, has received stellar reviews, including one from Library Journal, which called it, a "taut political conspiracy thriller" and "quick-paced page-turner."
