President Donald Trump has a wonderful opportunity to put pressure on Republicans to get rid of the 60-vote rule necessary to progress the spending bill in his fight with Democrats over the border wall and a possible federal government shutdown, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.
"The 60-vote rule undermines the will of the American people, and all it does is protect the minority senators and gives them more leverage and power than they deserve," DeLay told host John Cardillo on Tuesday's "Newsmax Now."
"They got rid of the 60-vote rule in confirming judges, and it's working fine. They ought to do the same on everything else. Go ahead and let them filibuster if they want to. That 60-cloture vote that stops them from proceeding has got to stop, and it's hurting the Republicans."

Trump clashed with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer earlier Tuesday in the Oval Office, and said he would shut down the government if he does not get the funding he wants for a border wall. The president wants $5 billion to put up a wall between Mexico and the United States, but Democrats have only offered $1.3 billion.
