Rand Paul to Newsmax TV: Wall Debate Should Bring Cost Down

The argument over building a wall on the southern border is good if it helps to bring down the cost of doing so, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" on Wednesday.

Sen. Paul said he is for enhancing security at the border, including a wall, but "for a conservative wall not an unlimited spending wall."

He stressed some of the estimates for how much the wall should cost are outrageous and Congress should take its oversight role seriously to make sure there is not unnecessary waste.

Paul said, as a fiscal conservative, he is distressed some of his party colleagues have abandoned a serious effort to tackle debt by giving up on spending caps.

Asked if he was for a government shutdown, Paul said "I'm not for shutting the government down on purpose, but I'm also not for keeping it open and spending a trillion dollars we don't have."

Turning to the issue of Saudi Arabia, Paul said the U.S. should end support for Riyadh's coalition war in Yemen, because the Saudis are not reliable partners, have constantly been bombing civilian centers, and have defied American requests to stop doing so.

Paul said, in addition to the Saudi killing of journalist of Jamal Khashoggi, the country is the largest state sponsor of radical Islam and has spent a hundred billion dollars spreading hatred of Jews, Christians, and Hindus, which makes it more difficult to fight terrorism.

Paul also praised the Senate for planning to hold a vote on criminal justice reform. He said he expected the bill to pass and many of the details included in it are humane or common-sense measures.
