Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., told Newsmax on Wednesday that former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has Republicans "a little concerned" about maintaining their majority in the House after his retirement announcement.
McCarthy announced on Wednesday that he will retire from Congress at the end of this year, a few months after he was forced out of his post as House Speaker after a push by members of his own party.
Good reacted to the announcement on "Newsline," saying, "I certainly thank him for his service, wish him well, and we wish the best for him."
He added that "it's unusual for a former speaker to stay in the body. Hopefully, [former House Speaker California Democrat Rep.] Nancy Pelosi will follow him and resign soon as well."
Good said that Republicans have "a lot to do, a lot on our plate as a Republican majority. We've got to deliver for the American people: cutting our spending, securing our border, getting the Senate to take up our Israel package, reforming FISA surveillance so it works for the American people and protects their individual liberties and their constitutional freedoms."
McCarthy's announcement comes after news that Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, is leaving Congress to become president of Youngstown State University. Both of these departures come after the House voted to expel New York Republican Rep. George Santos, leaving the GOP with a slim majority in the Lower Chamber.
When asked if Republicans are concerned about maintaining control over the House, Good said, "You're seeing some resignations and some departures from both sides and certainly we'd like to have the largest majority that we can have.
"And so you get obviously a little concerned as it gets more narrow, but hopefully, we'll have some Democrat departures to balance it out, and hopefully, we'll stay united as a Republican majority."
