Jeffrey Lord: Graham Was 'World Citizen'

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

The Rev. Billy Graham was a "world citizen" whose "strictly nonpartisan" teachings made him a friend and spiritual adviser to millions of people around the globe, including U.S. presidents from Dwight Eisenhower to George W. Bush, political strategist Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"He was truly a world citizen. I often think of when I was a kid, watching these mammoth events that he would have in places like Madison Square Garden," Lord, who worked as an associate political director under President Ronald Reagan, said to Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."

"He gave these fiery sermons to hundreds of thousands of people — both in terms of thousands right in front of him and then more on television. And then people would come up and accept Jesus Christ. He was just an amazing man.

"He traveled all over the world was friends a one president of the United States after another, it was strictly bipartisan."

Graham — the most widely heard Christian evangelist in history with crusades that spanned more than 185 countries and territories — died Wednesday at the age of 99 at his home in North Carolina.

Lord recalled how Graham and Reagan had been friends since 1953 when Reagan was still a Hollywood movie star and yet to launch a career in politics.

"In 1980, then-former Gov. Reagan was getting ready to go into the North Carolina primary, and of course Billy Graham was from North Carolina. And [Reagan] asked him for an endorsement," Lord, a contributing editor to The American Spectator, told Khan.

"And Rev. Graham said, 'Ron you and I have been friends for a long time, but if I do that I will be getting into partisan politics and that will hurt my ministry and I think you'll understand,' which Reagan did."

Reagan, in 1983, awarded Graham the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor.
