President Donald Trump will pardon former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio on federal contempt charges because "it was his duty to protect his people" from crime brought on by illegal immigration, Bill O'Reilly told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"Arpaio defied the government," the former Fox News host told John Bachman in an interview. "He was rightly convicted because he overstepped his local mandate — but if I were Trump, I'd pardon him."

O'Reilly's latest book, "Killing England: The Brutal Struggle for American Independence," debuts Sept. 19.

"Arpaio is very, very adamant that illegal immigration had created chaos in Maricopa County, where he was the sheriff," O'Reilly explained.

"That chaos was leading to crime, was leading to deprivation, was leading to all kinds of things — and it was his duty to protect his people.

"OK? That's his deposition," O'Reilly said. "If he did it the wrong way, he did it the wrong way.

"But Trump can go in and say: 'Look, the guy was trying to protect his folks in Phoenix and in Maricopa. I'm going to give him a pardon.'

"And that's what will happen," he told Bachman. "I know that will happen."
