O'Reilly, Stossel Battle Over Libertarian View on ISIS

By    |   Tuesday, 09 September 2014 09:59 PM

Fox News hosts Bill O'Reilly and John Stossel duked it out over U.S. intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) on Tuesday night's "O'Reilly Factor."

Stossel, who often draws O'Reilly's ire for his libertarian views, said he "mostly" agrees with former Rep. Ron Paul's assessment that American involvement will simply serve as a recruiting tool for ISIS while draining the U.S. Treasury.

O'Reilly challenged the non-interventionist position, asking Stossel if he doesn't believe ISIS will gain strength until the United States finally has to "confront a world war situation."

Stossel admitted, "That's possible," but said it is a "mistake" to think the United States can take out ISIS' leadership." He pointed to the failure of an American victory in Vietnam.

"We didn't really fight that war all-out, did we?" O'Reilly countered, saying that President Lyndon Johnson tied one hand behind the backs of the military.

O'Reilly pointed out that Germany and Japan were allowed to gain strength in the 1930s, "and then there's a catastrophe worldwide."

Stossel admitted libertarians are not all in the isolationist camp. He said about 25 percent of libertarians favor intervention.

"We're not going to allow Iran to get an atomic bomb, a nuclear weapon," O'Reilly said.

"Ron Paul would allow them to get that, he said he would."

During his 2012 presidential campaign, Paul said Iran had a right to want a nuclear weapon, considering the dangerous countries that border it. His Republican primary opponents blasted Paul over the comment.

When Stossel asked why Europe isn't being asked to take care of ISIS, O'Reilly countered, "Because Europe isn't going to do anything about it."

"Because they freeload off us," Stossel said. "They don't spend much on defense."

"That's the way of the world," O'Reilly said. "We're not changing Spain. And we're not going to change the Arab nations, although I think the Arab nations now are going to give us plenty of support going forward against ISIS."

Stossel said America should only attack with all-out war only when we are sure the war is headed to U.S. soil. But he said the current airstrikes were proper, as was rescuing the Yazidis who were starving on a mountaintop in Iraq after fleeing ISIS.

"So, you're not as kooky as Ron Paul," O'Reilly said. "Because he wouldn't have done that."

"He wouldn't have done that," Stossel agreed. "He thinks it creates more problems."

Stossel also read a quote from O'Reilly from a time when Stossel said O'Reilly was "wiser." The quote read, "If we intervene in every human rights violation, we'd be in 90 countries now."

"We cannot do every one," O'Reilly said after hearing his own quote. "We have to do the ones that are really big. And this is really big."
