Bill Kristol: End Is Near for Ted Cruz

By    |   Monday, 02 May 2016 05:03 PM

The race for the GOP presidential nomination is "pretty close" to being over for Ted Cruz, Bill Kristol, editor of the conservative news and opinion publication The Weekly Standard, tells Newsmax TV.

"Pretty close. No question. You got to win Indiana or have a virtual tie or something there," Kristol said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"I kind of like Ted Cruz and I very much like Carly Fiorina … [but] I defer to the voters on this."

Kristol said Cruz, who currently has 565 delegates to Donald Trump’s 996, is hoping his pick of former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential running mate will make a difference in Tuesday’s Hoosier State contest.

But, Kristol believes, it is unlikely to help.

"The truth is that vice presidential picks almost never make a difference. Voters, pretty intelligently I think, realize that the president is the guy who matters," he said.

"The VP can be powerful or not so powerful at the discretion of the president, but I think it is a reasonable last-ditch gamble by Cruz. It just looks from the polling in Indiana that he's not going to [win], but maybe we'll all be fooled."
