Bill Kristol: 'Sanders Phenomenon More Amazing' Than Trump

Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders is finding support from many of the people he's targeting for higher taxes, The Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol tells Newsmax TV.

In an appearance Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show," Kristol said he was having coffee in the Chelsea section of New York City recently when a man walked in and told him he and his friends were voting for Sanders.

"This guy was 45, he was well-dressed, he was getting a coffee on his way to work in Midtown or maybe in Wall Street," Kristol said. "We actually chatted about schools a bit and his kids go to a private school, we're talking about how hard it is in the city, I mean, I'm just amazed. … A lot of people who are making, I'm going to say 3, 4, $500,000 a year … doing well in America are voting for Bernie Sanders. I find the Sanders phenomenon even more amazing than the Trump one in a way."

On the GOP side, Kristol said he has no problem with the rules currently in place and respects Ted Cruz's campaign for "paying attention to detail and hustling and working hard for every delegate even if they didn't get all the votes."

Still, he said, seeing the campaign boast about it is likely to rub many people the wrong way.

"You're playing a good hand of poker, play the hand," he said. "Don't say at each card, 'Boy, I'm playing really clever here.'"
