Bill Kristol: Bernie Sanders Has Hillary Running Scared

By    |   Friday, 05 Jun 2015 05:48 PM

Hillary Clinton is truly worried about the challenge from Sen. Bernie Sanders for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination and trying to attract the support of liberals from her party, Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, tells Newsmax TV.

"She's trying to make herself a leader of the liberal wing of the party and appeal to them in a sort of demagogic and divisive way," Kristol said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

On Thursday, Clinton came out swinging against potential Republican presidential rivals, accusing them of trying to make it tougher for millions of Americans to vote.

Criticizing Governors Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Chris Christie of New Jersey, and former Governors Jeb Bush of Florida and Rick Perry of Texas, Clinton said they and others have made it more difficult for students to vote.

As well she said, they have cut the numbers of days set aside for early voting and have demanded voter ID provisions.

Kristol believes the harsh words from the sole Democratic presidential candidate, until Sanders threw his hat on the ring, is a subtle push to ward off Sanders, an independent who describes himself as a democratic socialist, and other liberal challengers.

"She's more scared than people realize about a challenge for the left. That's what that says. This is not a good general election issue for her," Kristol told Steve Malzberg.

"She's worried about Bernie Sanders and we can all laugh about Bernie Sanders, but the fact is he could be like [Sen. Eugene] McCarthy in '67, stir up an anti-war base, an anti-Wall Street base.... [Clinton is] trying to protect herself with these kinds of efforts."

Sanders, the junior senator from Vermont announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential election on May 26th.
