Texas AG Paxton to Newsmax TV: Biden Admin Dodging Q's on Border Figures

By    |   Wednesday, 10 March 2021 04:30 PM EST

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says the Biden administration is dodging questions on the specific number of border crossings because of the problem they created by opening things up.

“She’s just basically pushing off the real question, which is, ‘Why did you open the border?’ and now you see the consequences, ‘What do you think about the consequences that you have created with your narrative and your invitation to people to come to our country and the suggestion that you won’t be deported,’” Paxton said Wednesday, in reference to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. Paxton made his comments during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “John Bachman Now” after Psaki referred a reporter to the Department of Homeland Security on specific figures concerning border crossings.

“I think that’s clear – that they’ve created a problem, now they don’t want to answer the questions,” he added.

Psaki on Tuesday told a reporter: "We’ve been very clear that there is an increase, that there are more children coming across the border than we have facilities for at this point in time. Those numbers are tracked by the Department of Homeland Security so I would suggest you talk to them about specifics."

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Monday requested volunteers from agencies within the department to help with an “overwhelming” surge of illegal immigrants, according to a memo viewed by the Washington Times.

“Today I activated the Volunteer Force to support Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as they face a surge in migration along the Southwest Border,” Mayorkas wrote in his note.

“I also realize these are uncertain times and being away from home may be concerning. But today your colleagues need assistance carrying out their mission to help others, and DHS is going to support you while deployed,” he added.

Paxton lauded Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s order to launch “Operation Lone Star,” a plan to put National Guard troops on the crisis-steeped border.

“The governor, I applaud everything he’s doing, but I sure wish that we had a president like (former President Donald) Trump who was doing what needed to be done to protect our citizens, to protect us from human trafficking, from drug trafficking and from the increase in COVID that’s going to occur as a result of these border crossings that we don’t control now,” said Paxton.

Biden has stopped construction of the border wall and moved to strengthen protections for recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). His administration has also moved to place a 100-day pause on deportations, though a court in late February indefinitely banned enforcement of the moratorium.

The number of attempted illegal border crossings rose 28% in February, the first full month of the Biden administration.
