Bernie Kerik: US Should Be 'Catalyst' in ISIS Fight, Not Iran

By    |   Monday, 09 March 2015 10:49 AM

Allowing Iran to be the "saviors for the Iraqi people" in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) is a mistake by the United States, former New York Police Commissioner and former Interim Minister of the Interior of Iraq Bernie Kerik said Monday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"Iran is an enemy," Kerik said. "They've said they're an enemy, an enemy against Israel. They want nuclear arms and, of course, it's concerning.

"My other concern with regard to this is that because Iran is there, we're not supporting that area ... they are in, Tikrit. We should be the catalyst behind the removal of ISIS, not Iran, and Iran is going to come in and they're going to push the Shia movement into Iraq as they've done in the south, and they will be the saviors for the Iraqi people. That's a bad move for us."

Iran's presence there should not come as surprise to anyone, Kerik said, since "all of the major players on the ground, the commanders on the ground, said the pullout was a bad move and those predictions early on … are coming back to haunt us. Because once we pulled out, we lost intelligence, we lost our relationships, we lost the movement on the ground and it was a bad move."

Whether or not there is any truth to reports that ISIS is hacking into U.S. Internet sites remains to be confirmed, according to Kerik, but he said Americans would be "naïve" to think the terror group is not trying to.

"I saw statistics the other day where there are tens of thousands of ISIS Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts, and these other social media accounts ... they are recruiting and attempting to recruit globally for people to come in and fight for them in Iraq and Syria," he said. "We'd be stupid to think that they're not trying to hack their way into some of these social media accounts and other places as well. The U.S. has to be on top of this."

Revelations that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton exclusively used a private email server for official business presents another national security issue for the U.S. government, he said, though not as it relates to ISIS.

"I'm talking about Russia, China, Venezuela and countries like this that are constantly trying to hack their way into our government, our financial systems, our politicians," he said. "That's why it's extremely important to find out what happened and why, and to ensure it doesn't happen in the future."
