Bernard Kerik: Police Officers Deserve 'Benefit of the Doubt'

Police officers around the country "put their lives on the line" — and "they should get the benefit of the doubt" in dealing with the public, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"They go out and they do a job," Kerik, who managed the city's force during 9/11, told "Dennis Michael Lynch: Unfiltered" in an interview. "They have a job to do and they do that job every day."

He praised former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, under whom he served as commissioner, because "the cops got the benefit of the doubt until they were proven wrong.

"If they're proven wrong, if they're proven they did something departmentally wrong, they're disciplined," Kerik told Lynch. "If they did something criminally wrong, they're brought up on charges. Maybe they go to jail.

"At the end of the day, that's not the whole police service."
