The latest mass shooting at an Oregon community college has brought gun control back to the forefront but that is because "we seem to lose sight of common sense" after such incidents, former New York Police Department chief Bernard Kerik tells Newsmax TV.

"The common sense [fact] is the people that have guns, the people that own guns, that buy them legally, they're not going out and shooting people and killing people," Kerik told host J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"They're not the people in Chicago shooting 82 people in a weekend and killing nine, they're not the people shooting 22 in Baltimore over a weekend. These are people that obtained guns illegally, went out, and committed violent crime. The legal gun owners, they're not doing any of this violent activity."

Noting increased calls for dealing better with mentally ill members of society, Kerik , author of "From Jailer to Jailed: My Journey From Correction and Police Commissioner to to Inmate #84888-054," said, "I'm all for gun control when it comes to having people do backgrounds, looking at mental illness, things like this, a waiting period. I'm for that. But I don't think we should take guns away from law-abiding citizens and take them away from people that want to protect themselves."

Political commentator Ari Rabin-Havt, a former adviser to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, dismissed the notion that mass shooters are intentionally seeking out gun-free zones.

"There have been a few studies on that, let me give you an example," he said. "James Holmes, the Aurora [Colorado] movie theater killer, we have his diary. He wrote down everything, why he chose certain places…. He talked about the exits of the movie theater, he said he didn't want to hit an airport because it would send the wrong message.

"He never said anything about the movie theater being a gun-free zone, yet people said, 'oh, that movie theater is a gun-free zone, that's why he hit it.' His diaries were pretty explicit. It wasn't there."
