Top Rabbi: Dems' Disrespect Toward Netanyahu Is 'Bewildering'

The idea that some Democrats plan to boycott the upcoming speech to Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is "bewildering" and disrespectful, says Rabbi Benjamin Blech, a professor at Yeshiva University.

"Bewildering, more than anything else," Blech said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Israel … represents the only democracy in the Middle East who shares our values, who's been an ally for all these years.... To disrespect [Netanyahu] in such a way [is] based on what principle?"

The prime minister is set to speak before Congress about the state of Israel and the nuclear threat from Iran at the invitation of House Speaker John Boehner.

The White House is miffed that it was not consulted about the invitation, which it reportedly believes breaks protocol, and as a result, Obama will not meet with Netanyahu during his visit.

"The president who had time to have an interview with a woman whose only claim to fame was YouTube and that she ate breakfast cereal in the bath tub? He had time for that?" Blech said, referring to the president's interview with GloZell Green.

"The level of disrespect and enmity, enmity, to the leader of Israel who only wants to come to Congress because he was invited and who was anxious to take up this invitation because for Israel, it is existential.

"It's a question of survival. Doesn't anyone remember that Iran said when they get the bomb, which it seems like they're going to get, thanks to Obama, the first thing they want to do on the table is destroy Israel, annihilate Israel?"

Blech said that the world never took seriously the threat of tyrants, such as Germany's Adolf Hitler, either.

"Hitler didn't conceal what he wanted to do, he wrote a book about it. And what does the world say, 'he can't mean it, nobody can possibly mean that kind of evil.' The problem is that they mean it," Blech said.
