Ben Stein: Shutdown 'Would Be a Comedy If It Weren't Unfunny'

Economist and actor Ben Stein told Newsmax TV the government shutdown was pointless and Congress has bigger issues to worry about.

"I don't know why they did it; the whole thing would be a comedy if it weren't unfunny," Stein told hosts Bill Tucker and Nan Hayworth on "Newsmax Now."

"It would be a comedy if it weren't for the fact that the people who are hired and paid to defend this country were not getting paid and were put in the financial jeopardy, financial insecurity. There just was never any reason for it, and I keep thinking it's just tit for tat."

Lawmakers should focus on bigger items, including rebuilding the military and refocusing on competition from other advanced nations, getting sanctuary cities in line concerning immigration, and, focusing on the "many, many different kinds of missing emails, the kind of destruction of government property involving Mrs. Clinton's machine," Stein added.

"The shutdown did nothing whatsoever to help with defense," said Stein, author of "The Capitalist Code." "Defense is our number one concern, we're falling farther and farther behind our potential adversaries in terms of their capacity to wage war. That's a serious, serious crisis. The shutdown did nothing, in fact it was against that.

"We have a serious crisis of the law enforcement apparatus of government working to prevent the enforcement of the law, instead of encouraging the enforcement of the law. That's a real crisis. We’re not doing anything about that.

"We have a real crisis in terms of there being basically insurrection in terms of my state, California, and many other states refusing to follow the law about immigration, following the Constitution on immigration. We have a situation very much like the beginning of the Civil War and basically people are just letting the states get away with it. It's very much as if the Confederates have fired on Fort Sumter and Abraham Lincoln just said, 'well, we'll await developments.'"
