Impeachment is not what Congress should be focused on, according to Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., on Newsmax TV.
Proceedings begin Tuesday on the Senate trial of former President Donald Trump, who was impeached by the House for inciting protesters to riot the Capitol on Jan. 6.
"It is a waste of time and there's a lot of [other] things we should be working on in Congress right now," Loudermilk told host Grant Stinchfield on Monday's "Stinchfield." "But we're caught up in the theatrics. They just want to kick Donald Trump; they just want to embarrass conservatives. This is all about promoting a far left, socialist agenda."
During the segment, Loudermilk and Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga., were shown a video of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., saying something as "momentous" as the Jan. 6 riot cannot be swept "under the rug."
However, Democrats insist the Capitol riot cannot be compared to other violent protests, such as those fueled by groups including Black Lives Matter.
"No, you shouldn't compare that, even though there was a cost of $1 billion, 25 people died, 14,000 were injured, and 2,000 police injured," Loudermilk said sarcastically. "'Oh, don't compare these two, they're totally different.' Nonsense."
Hice said the Democrats' hypocrisy will become evident during the trial.
"They are masters of accusing us and accusing President Trump of the very thing they themselves are guilty of," Hice said. "They have been inciting riots, they have been sitting back, urging this type of behavior."
