Texas GOP Rep. Jodey Arrington said Friday Texans won’t stand for a coronavirus-forced shutdown, asserting COVID-19 spikes “will come and go,” and that the current uptick is “overblown.”

In an interview on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co,” Arrington argued there’d be only “greater harm to our communities” if there was a rollback of the economic reopening.

“Texas won't shut down. The citizens of Texas won't allow for it, and I don't believe the (Republican) Governor (Greg Abbott) would support that,” he said.

“The fact is that will be far greater harm to our communities, and our families and public health if we do shut down,” he asserted.

Abbott, though, on early Friday evening said “the next step would have to be a lockdown” if the state’s cases continue to grow.

Texas reported 10,900 new coronavirus cases on Thursday. Nearly a tenth were in Hidalgo County, near the border with Mexico.

Arrington said he thinks Texans can “manage the capacity at each of the local communities and hospitals.

"I don't see systemic implications here," he said. "I think the threshold should be high — and that is, if there's a broad base systemic impact to the health system then you can take more extreme measures and I don't see that. I see Texas managing the capacity at the local level well.

“I understand spikes will come and go,” he added. “This will all be managed and we'll see the numbers come down. I think this is overblown.”

Arrington also said President Donald Trump is wildly popular in his West Texas district.

“The folks in in my part of Texas love this president — his strength, the policy he’s put in place that have increased our prospects for greater prosperity not only throughout the country but especially in rural areas like West Texas,” he said.

“The level of prosperity we were experiencing in West Texas was unprecedented pre-COVID."
