Ex-ICE Official: Armed Militias at Border Are 'Recipe for Disaster'

By    |   Friday, 11 July 2014 05:12 PM EDT

Armed militias are at the border offering their assistance to law enforcement, but former Immigration and Customs Enforcement official Dan Cadman says that's "a recipe for disaster."

"One of the ways the federal government can ensure that doesn’t happen is to be sure that they saturate the border areas with an adequate number of border patrol agents, ICE agents, deportation officers," Cadman told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Friday.

"If need be, perhaps it is time to ask National Guardsmen to play an assistive role in the border as they have in the past in Texas, Arizona and elsewhere," he added.

The fellow at The Center for Immigration Studies explained that one of the reasons there may not be enough agents at the border is because "a lot of them have gotten wrapped up in the transportation of these individuals on buses, charter aircraft, etc. to disperse them throughout the United States.

"Each of the officers that's involved in that kind of transportation is an officer that's not available to actually be there pursuing his or her main duty of patrolling the border and safe guarding the sovereignty of the United States," he added.

That's why he thinks calling in the National Guard would be a good idea right now.

"They could ameliorate the amount of time and effort that they're spending right now on transportation," he explained.

According to Cadman, it's "astounding" for illegal immigrants to be "turning themselves in."

"It tells you something about the mindset of the individuals who are showing up now," he explained. "It suggests that they have absolutely no fear whatsoever of removal from the United States."
