Ari Fleischer: Stephanopoulos 'Not an Independent Journalist'

By    |   Monday, 18 May 2015 07:15 PM

George Stephanopoulos is biased in favor of Democrats, a fact viewers should realize when they watch his on-air reports as ABC's chief news anchor, Ari Fleischer, former spokesman for President George W. Bush, tells Newsmax TV.

"Viewers need to look at Stephanopoulos and say he's not an independent journalist. He is not. He remains to his core to be a Democratic partisan and that's the problem," Fleischer said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"He can do a good job occasionally and ask hard questions to Democrats, but that is not an excuse for the things we don't know that we now know that he's doing behind the scenes."

Last week, Stephanopoulos confessed he had made donations totaling $75,000 to the Clinton Foundation, the charity founded by Bill and Hillary Clinton, in recent years without disclosing those contributions to his employer.

All the while he reported on the Clintons for ABC, including an interview with former President Bill Clinton about the Clinton Global Initiative on "Good Morning America" last September.

Prior to going to ABC, Stephanopoulos headed communications for Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign and later served as his White House communications director.

Stephanopoulos said in a statement: "I made charitable donations to the foundation in support of the work they’re doing on global AIDS prevention and deforestation, causes I care about deeply.

"I thought that my contributions were a matter of public record. However, in hindsight, I should have taken the extra step of personally disclosing my donations to my employer and to the viewers on air during the recent news stories about the foundation. I apologize."

But Fleischer, now president of Fleischer Sports Communications, said the disclosure paints a questionable picture of Stephanopoulos' credibility.

"It's part of why Republicans and conservatives can scratch their heads and say there's bias in the media, because there is,'' Fleischer said.

"It's because George Stephanopoulos' bosses actually think he's independent when he's not, and that's the problem."

Over the weekend, Breitbart.com reported that Stephanopoulos' connections to the Clinton Foundation may be more substantial than he has so far admitted.

Breitbart said an archived page of the Clinton Global Initiative website lists George Stephanopoulos as a "notable member" for the years 2010 and 2011. ABC has confirmed the anchor was a member during both years.
