Jailed Marine's Mother: His Mental Health Is Deteriorating

By    |   Tuesday, 23 Sep 2014 08:02 PM

The mental health of Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi is deteriorating as he wastes away in a dank Mexican jail, awaiting vindication on bogus weapons charges, says his mother, Jill Tahmooressi.

"The last month was a really difficult one for Andrew. For one, he expected to be in court on Sept. 9 and he was never picked up to be taken. That was quite a storm of confusion for him," Tahmooressi said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Then, his phone was broken for eight days in his cell. He has absolutely nothing, no radio, no TV, and no workout equipment — no contact with what's happening in the world, with reality.

"He can't center himself when he's not in contact with me. It's a really dark time since Sept. 9."

Tahmooressi, 26, is being held at the El Hongo Penitentiary in Tecate, Mexico. The Marine reservist, who served two tours in Afghanistan, was arrested March 31 at a Tijuana checkpoint after three rifles were found in the truck of his vehicle.

He says he was lost and had asked a guard for directions back to the United States. If convicted on weapons charges, he faces up to 21 years in prison.

"What I find excruciatingly painful is six months into this process is not even the Mexican prosecutor has brought forth any evidence other than the fact that Andrew was parked and talking to a Mexican customs agent, saying, 'Please help me, I made a wrong turn, I got lost, I've got three guns in my truck, can you help me get to the U.S.A.?'" Jill Tahmooressi said.

"I don't see expedition, and I don't see due process at an urgency."
