Alan Simpson: Republican Party Is 'In Total Chaos'

Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show"

Former Sen. Alan Simpson says the Republican Party is "in total chaos" and may be "ripped to shreds" as the GOP old guard struggles to destroy presidential front-runner Donald Trump's campaign, a task that appears to be impossible.

"Let me tell you who's voting for Trump: people who are fed up. You aren't going to get them away from Trump," Simpson, a Wyoming Republican, said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"They don't like [Sen. Ted] Cruz and they get to convention and some purist comes forward with a compromise candidate and they're going to say, 'pal, we didn't come this far through all these months while you're sitting plotting how to get rid of us — and you ain't getting rid of us.'

"So hang on tight and the party may get ripped to shreds, that's the way it works. I'm 84, I've never seen anything like it. They're like cannibals."

Simpson, a former member of the U.S. Commission on Presidential Debates, said the Republican Party he sees today is unrecognizable from the one he grew up with.

"I've been in the party, I voted for Ike [Dwight Eisenhower]; my dad was a delegate to that convention and it was Ike vs. [Robert] Taft. The Taft people thought Ike was a pinko and the Ike people thought that Taft was a right-wing cuckoo. Clear back then," he said.

"[Now] it's the right versus the left, [the pro-] abortion versus the antis, the gays and lesbians. On and on it goes, this party is in total chaos. It couldn't get any worse."

Simpson said one solution may be to go back to days when cigar-smoking politicos met in backrooms and quietly mapped out who was going to run.

"After this one they might go back to what was known as the smoke-filled room and get back there and huddle and say, 'here's what we're going to do,' which was appalling to the American people but it worked," Simpson told Malzberg.

"And now we have the caucus system … that stuff makes no sense, makes everybody look stupid."
