Alan Dershowitz: Attacks in Europe Prove Jews Need Safe Haven In Israel

By    |   Tuesday, 17 February 2015 06:26 PM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow that Israel is ready for a "mass immigration" of Jews from Europe is an appropriate response to the chilling growth of anti-Semitism, renowned civil-rights lawyer Alan Dershowitz told "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"[There is] One single country, that's the nation state of the Jewish people, that unequivocally and unconditionally opens its doors to every Jew," Dershowitz, a veteran Harvard Law professor, said Tuesday on the Newsmax TV.

"Remember that six million Jews died largely because the United States, Canada and other good countries wouldn't open their doors to Jews.

"And when the state of Israel established its first law [which] said we will never turn away anybody who is under threat of genocide, it's been proved essential."

The recent terror attacks in Denmark and France, in which Jews were murdered, proves that Jews need a guaranteed safe haven — something Netanyahu said the Jewish state offers.

"Jews have been murdered again on European soil only because they were Jews," the prime minister said Sunday. "Of course, Jews deserve protection in every country, but we say to Jews, to our brothers and sisters: Israel is your home."

Dershowitz agrees.

"Jews have the right to live wherever they want to live, anywhere in the world, but the one place that they absolutely have the right to live in is Israel," he said.

"What Netanyahu is basically saying is you always have a home in Israel … if the Danish government won't provide you with enough protection, if the French government won't provide you with enough protection — and the French government has not provided enough protection."

Dershowitz said prior to the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, which was followed by executions in a nearby Kosher deli, there had been a "large number of Jewish killings, including school children.

"The French did very little about it. I understand where Netanyahu is coming from and I understand where Jewish leaders in some parts of Europe are saying no, we want to have thriving Jewish communities," Dershowitz said.

"The answer is, it's up to each individual Jew to decide where to live, as long as he has the option of going to Israel, which is a very important option."

Dershowitz, who is a Newsmax contributor, also stressed the importance of Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to the United States, during which he’ll address Congress about the threat to Israel by Iran.

The prime minister was invited by House Speaker John Boehner without input from the White House, which prompted President Obama to decline to meet with Netanyahu during the visit. Some Democratic lawmakers are threatening not to show for the speech.

"It's a very bad mistake for any congressman to walk out on the prime minister of Israel. I hope they will reconsider and not do it. They're not actually threatening to walk out, what they're threatening to do is not show up, but functionally, it's very similar," Dershowitz said.

"I would hope that every Democrat, Republican, congressman, regardless of race or religion, would show up and show respect to the prime minister of an ally country who knows a great deal about Iran's nuclear program and about the Middle East. You can disagree with him, publicly criticize him, but show up and listen to him speak. That makes the most sense."
