Alan Dershowitz: ISIS a 'Passing Blip' Compared to Iran

By    |   Thursday, 26 Feb 2015 03:01 PM

Iran is far more dangerous than the Islamic State (ISIS) despite the horrible atrocities the group has committed because unlike Iran, the ISIS militants aren't on the brink of obtaining a nuclear weapon, renowned legal expert Alan Dershowtiz tells Newsmax TV.

"Of course Iran is so much more dangerous than ISIS. ISIS is a passing blip," Dershowitz, the Harvard Law School professor emeritus, told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Thursday.

"It (ISIS) will be destroyed within a very short period of time," he contends. "It made so many mistakes going after Jordan by killing that pilot, going after Egypt by executing Egyptian Christians, provoking France, provoking European countries. It will be destroyed."

The Washington Post's David Ignatius said while appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Thursday that Iran's military is "dangerous with a capital 'D' " compared to ISIS.

Dershowitz said he agrees and said that by comparison "Iran is going to become a nuclear power because the United States is now, with the Europeans, allowing it to become a nuclear power.

"They are the greatest exporter of terrorism in the world, they wholly own Hezbollah, they support Hamas, they support many other terrorist groups, they export terrorism as far as Argentina, and there's no indication that they're softening their policies or positions," Dershowitz explained.

"If they become a nuclear weapons power, they will become the most dangerous country in the world today," he said.

"ISIS is nothing compared to them, and the idea that we need the help of Iran to destroy ISIS is ridiculous," he added.

According to Dershowitz, "the American administration is making a dreadful mistake by essentially changing the American policy," as the United States continues negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

"President Obama called me to the oval office once a few years ago, looked me in the eye and said 'Alan, you know, I don't bluff. Iran will never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.' " he said.

However, "that was the policy then; he wasn't bluffing. He was telling me the truth, but the policy has now changed."

"Our position is we're going to allow them to develop nuclear weapons in 10 years. Well, 10 years means five years or six years and it will mean the end of any kind of nonproliferation," the former Harvard Law School professor explained.

If Iran has nuclear weapons, it will only be a matter of time before, Saudi Arabia, Egypt "all the Sunni nations will want" nuclear weapons "to have a counterweight to the Shiite nuclear bomb, which really frightens them."
