On the the 70th Holocaust Remembrance Day, renowned legal analyst Alan Dershowitz tells Newsmax TV that most Germans want to forget about the Holocaust.

"The vast majority of Germans want to put it behind them and want to forget about it," Dershowitz, Harvard Law School professor emeritus, told John Bachman and Miranda Khan on "Newsmax Now" on Thursday.

"That's true all over Europe. People feel guilty about it," he explained. "We have to remember because if you don't remember, it can be repeated."

According to Dershowitz, who is an outspoken supporter of Israel, "to prevent another Holocaust, we must always remember the prior Holocaust, and as Elie Wiesel once put it so well, 'the lesson of the Holocaust is always believe the threats of your enemies more than the promises of your friends.' "

In his speech commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared the Nazis who were trying "to trample civilization and replace it with a 'master race' " to Iran, who he said is "striving to take over the region and expand further with a declared goal of destroying the Jewish state."

Dershowitz said that "the Jewish nation is the only nation in the world threatened today with annihilation by a country that may in 10 years have the capability of carrying it out.

"The friends of the Jewish people didn't help during the Holocaust, and Israel cannot count on even their greatest friend, the United States," he explained.

"Israel has to always be self-reliant, self-dependent. The nation state of the Jewish people always has to have the ability to protect themselves, not count on the United States," he said.

"I hope it won't come to Israel having to attack Iran's nuclear reactors, but, if the choice is between nuclear weapons in Iran or an Israeli attack, an Israeli attack may be the least worst solution compared to all the others," he added.
