The Working Families Party (WFP) announced in a tweet on Monday that it has switched its endorsement from the previous election, backing Sen. Elizabeth Warren this time around for the Democratic presidential nomination after supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016.

The endorsement by the organization, which has strong ties with unions, bolsters Warren’s left-wing and progressive credentials as she seeks to continue gaining ground on former Vice President Joe Biden in the polls, according to the Daily Beast.

“If our focus is on victory, we can’t be delusional about it,” WFP national director Maurice Mitchell told The New York Times. “You don’t defeat the moderate wing of Democrats through thought pieces or pithy tweets, you defeat their politics through organizing.”

Mitchell added that Warren “knows how to kick Wall Street kleptocrats where it hurts, and she’s got some truly visionary plans to make this country work for the many."

The endorsement process lasted for three months and included live question-and-answer sessions with the candidates, the Daily Beast reported. Warren had almost 61 percent of the vote in the first round of ranked-choice voting, followed by Sanders with almost 36 percent.

Mitchell also lauded Sanders, telling the Daily Beast that “We’re lucky to have two strong progressive candidates leading in this race. Senator Warren and Senator Sanders have both shaped the ideological terrain on which this campaign is being waged. They have proven an effective team on debate stages and in the polls, and we hope that partnership continues. We’re proud to call both of them allies in the fight for a more just America.”
