About 4.5 million American workers got a pay raise on New Year's Day, with new minimum-wage hikes taking effect in 18 states, according to Vice News.

The Economic Policy Institute estimated the increases — which range from 4 cents to $1 an hour — will put $5 billion more per year in workers' pockets.

Wages go up for workers in 19 cities as well, according to the National Employment Law Project — thanks either to new legislation, ballot measures, or automatic cost-of-living increases.

Federally, the minimum wage has stood at $7.25 an hour since 2009.

Here is the state-by-state breakdown, according to EPI data:

  • Maine: $1 to $10
  • Vermont: $.50 to $10.50
  • Rhode Island: $.50 to $10.10
  • New York: $.70 to $10.40
  • New Jersey: $.0.16 to $8.60
  • Florida: $0.15 to $8.25
  • Michigan: $.35 to $9.25
  • Ohio: $.15 to $8.30
  • Minnesota: $.15 to $9.65
  • Missouri: $.15 to $7.85
  • South Dakota: $.20 to $8.85
  • Montana: $.15 to $8.30
  • Colorado: $.90 to $10.20
  • Washington: $.50 to $11.50
  • California: $.50 to $11
  • Arizona: $.50 to $10.50
  • Alaska: $.04 to $9.84
  • Hawaii: $.85 to $10.10
