WaPo Watergate Reporters: 'We're Here Again' With Trump

(The Washington Post)

Pointing back to their detailed reporting of the fall of former GOP President Richard Nixon in his final year, Watergate reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein wrote in The Washington Post: "We're here again," although admitting the "Trump-Mueller history is yet to be written."

"Nixon didn't know it at the time, but the Saturday Night Massacre would become a pivot point in his presidency — crucial to the charge that he'd obstructed justice," they wrote this week. "For him, the consequences were terminal. A retelling of the episode, adapted from "The Final Days," as we called our book on the president's last year, can illuminate the stakes."

Nixon fired the special counsel investigating him, ultimately his undoing, they wrote, and President Donald Trump has been weighing doing the same with FBI special counsel Robert Mueller, who was assigned to investigate Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election but has since expanded that probe to look into Trump associates' actions during the president's transition and up to and through the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

"Nixon made two fateful miscalculations: He appointed another special prosecutor to replace [special prosecutor Archibald Cox], and he turned over an initial batch of tapes, including one that vividly incriminated him," Woodward and Bernstein wrote this week. "The Trump-Mueller history is yet to be written."
