The lone young woman seen in a viral photograph standing before two police officers in riot gear about to arrest her during a protest in Baton Rouge, La., has been identified as a 28-year-old nurse and mother from New York.

Ieshia Evans, 28, traveled to Louisiana to attend her first protest because she wanted a better life for her 5-year-old son, Evans' longtime friend Natasha Haynes told The Daily Mail.

Evans joined the protest against the police killings of black men after the shooting death of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge.

In the photo, Evans is seen standing alone in the middle of the street in a flowing dress with her arms folded as two officers in riot gear rush forward from a line of officers to take her into custody. She spent the night in jail and was released the next day.

Her charges are believed to be related to obstructing the public street as several protestors were arrested on that charge.

"I went into the street with my arms crossed and just stared at them. I guess they didn't like it because they detained me," Haynes said Evans told her.

"I just need you people to know. I appreciate the well wishes and love, but this is the work of God. I am a vessel! Glory to the most high!" Evans posted on Facebook after her release. "I'm glad I'm alive and safe. And that there were no casualties that I have witnessed first hand."

Jonathan Bachman, a freelance photographer who shot the image for Reuters, told The New York Times he knew the photograph was powerful and made it the first he transmitted to the news agency.

It has since gone viral on social media, with some comparing it to the man who stood in front of the tank at Tiananmen Square in 1989 during protests in Beijing.
