A group of Wisconsin taxpayers on Wednesday filed an emergency request urging the Supreme Court to block the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness plan, reports The Hill.
Biden's student loan forgiveness plan, announced in August, will cancel up to $20,000 in debt per borrower.
The application process is now open, and the administration says the forms should take five minutes to complete.
The request was filed to Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
Borrowers who apply before mid-November should see forgiveness before Jan. 1, when payments on loans are scheduled to restart after a pause during the pandemic. Some Republican-led states have filed lawsuits to try to stop the cancelation, but the Biden administration says they're confident the challenges won't succeed.
The report comes a couple of weeks after conservative group Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty on behalf of the Brown County Taxpayers Association in a lawsuit claimed Biden's plan violates federal law by intentionally seeking to narrow the racial wealth gap and help Black borrowers.
