White nationalist Richard Spencer, whose rally in Charlottesville, Virginia sparked violence, is expected to defy a University of Florida ban and make an appearance on campus, The Miami Herald is reporting.
UF President Kent Fuchs, citing "serious concerns for safety," had denied Spencer’s request to speak on campus Sept. 12.
Cameron Padgett, who has planned several events across the country for Spencer, and attorney Gary Edinger still negotiating with the university and will go to court to fight the ban, if necessary, according to the newspaper.
"We’re hoping they are going to change their mind," Edinger said. "And if they do not we will address that in federal court."
And Padgett is quoted in The Gainesville Sun, as saying: "I can confirm we are coming to the University of Florida, regardless."
He accused the university of trying to censor Spencer.
"It makes us feel like that University is censoring speech," he said. "If this was Joel Osteen coming to speak, you would need security and it’d be no problem. The First Amendment is pretty clear."
