US Sending 12 A-10 Warthog Planes to Romania

A dozen A-10 Warthog planes have been sent to Romania in the wake of Russian aggression in the region that has spurred fighting in Ukraine.

"The 354th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron forward deployed 12 A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft and approximately 200 Airmen and support equipment from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany to Campia Turzii, Romania over the weekend," Pentagon spokesman James Brindle said, Military.com reports.

"The unit will conduct training alongside our NATO allies to strengthen interoperability and demonstrate U.S. commitment to the security and stability of Europe," said Brindle, adding this is the first time the Warthog has been deployed to Romania, which partially borders Ukraine.

The jet is used for close air support, which includes attacks on ground targets such as tanks and other armored vehicles. Its deployment to Romania, which will last for at least 90 days, is part of the U.S. military's Operation Atlantic Resolve, the response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

"These rotational forces really bolster our capability. They underscore our commitment to European security and send a clear message that the U.S. is serious about the stability and security of Europe," U.S. European Command spokesman Lt. Col. David Westover told Military.com.

The Warthogs' deployment comes as the Pentagon is faced with a decision of whether to scrap it from its aircraft fleet because of budget cuts. The jet is able to get closer to the ground than other planes to attack targets, and it has been used in the offensive against the Islamic State (ISIS) since November.

Some lawmakers, however, want the Warthog to stay right where it is.

"The A-10 is the most capable air-to-ground weapons system that is in the entire inventory," Sen. John McCain said in December. "I think they will be with us for an extended period of time."

Adding to the U.S. presence in eastern Europe was the recent convoy of military vehicles that traveled more than 1,000 miles through the region in a show of force.
