Iran plans to send a group of warships into the Western Atlantic just as the Iranian government announced a $500 million increase in military spending, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

The action is a response to efforts by the United States to slap new U.N. sanctions on the country for what American officials say are violations of the nuclear agreement.

The moves comes after several tense interactions between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf region, the Free Beacon reported. Another Iranian drone reportedly flew near an American F-18 fighter jet Monday. The latest encounter brought the drone near enough to threaten the pilot's life.

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari on Sunday announced the move of warships into the Western Atlantic.

"No military official in the world thought that we can go round Africa to the Atlantic Ocean through the Suez Canal, but we did it as we had declared that we would go to the Atlantic and its Western waters," Sayyari was quoted as saying by FARS News Agency.

"We moved into the Atlantic and will go to its Western waters in the near future," Sayyari said.

Meanwhile, the nuclear watchdog group Iran Watch reported Monday that "Little-noticed biannual reporting by the U.N. Secretary General alleges that Iran is repeatedly violating . . . non-nuclear provisions."
