Russian President Vladimir Putin told a televised awards ceremony: "Russia's border doesn't end anywhere," according to a video posted and translated from Russian by BBC News.

Putin added: "That was a joke."

The Russian leader was speaking to geography students, asking one where the Russian border ends. The boy, 9, replied, translated by BBC News: "Russia's border ends at the Bering Strait, at the border with the USA."

That prompted Putin's tongue-in-cheek response. The crowd responded with laughter.

But issues have been serious with regard to Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in March 2014. That move prompted Putin to tell Russian ambassadors: "I would like to make it clear to all: Our country will continue to actively defend the rights of Russians, our compatriots abroad, using the entire range of available means – from political and economic to operations under international humanitarian law and the right of self-defense."

The Obama administration imposed economic sanctions against Russia for annexing the territory in Ukraine two years ago. President-elect Donald Trump has spoken for Putin and against President Barack Obama's sanctions of Russia during the election campaign this summer.
