Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump "regularly talk over the phone," the Russian president told a news outlet ahead of his visit to Vienna.

In remarks to Austrian TV channel ORF on Monday, Putin also said he "fully agreed" with Trump on the possibility of a new arms race between the two nations, but hoped they could head it off, CNN reported.

"Donald said he was worried about the possibility of a new arms race," Putin said of a recent call with Trump, CNN reported. "I fully agree with him – however, to prevent a possible arms [race], we should think about it, we should do something about it, give corresponding instructions to our Foreign Ministry and the U.S. State Department," he added.

He said there is no immediate plans for any formal sit-down between the two leaders.

"Indeed, Donald Trump and I have, firstly, met more than once at various international venues," Putin said, according to an official transcript available on the Kremlin's website, CNBC reported. "And secondly, we regularly talk over the phone."

"I think that the possibility of these meetings depends to a large extent on the internal political situation in the United States," he said, CNN reported. "The congressional election campaign is getting underway and then there will be the next presidential election, and the President of the United States is coming under attack over various matters. I think this is the main reason."

Former Presidents Barack Obama and George H.W. Bush both met formally with the Russian President within six months of taking office, with Obama traveling to the Kremlin in July 2009 to meet then-President Dmitry Medvedev and Putin, who was prime minister at the time. CNN reported Trump and Putin have talked on the phone to each other eight times, and have met face-to-face twice.

According to CNN, the pace of Trump-Putin calls is roughly equivalent to the number of phone calls Obama held with Putin in his final two years in office. They spoke nine times in 2015 and 2016.
