The sister of the late Vince Foster writes in a Washington Post op-ed that Donald Trump was "irresponsible" and "cruel" to use her brother's suicide for political gain.

Sheila Foster Anthony was responding to an interview with the Post published this week in which Trump alludes to conspiracy theories from the 1990s that Foster was murdered for knowing too much about Whitewater and other Clinton-era scandals.

He called Foster's death "very fishy."

"[Foster] had intimate knowledge of what was going on," Trump said. "He knew everything that was going on, and then all of a sudden he committed suicide."

"In this interview, Trump cynically, crassly and recklessly insinuated that my brother, Vincent W. Foster Jr., may have been murdered because 'he had intimate knowledge of what was going on' and that Hillary Clinton may have somehow played a role in Vince's death," Anthony wrote in response. "How wrong. How irresponsible. How cruel."

Anthony wrote that Foster lived with her in the Washington, D.C., area when he first took his job in the Clinton administration as a deputy White House counsel before renting out his Little Rock, Ark. house and moving his wife and children to Georgetown.

Foster talked about his depression with his sister, she says, but feared seeking help because it might reflect poorly on the Clinton White House, already plagued by criticism over the travel office firings and more. She gave him a list of psychiatrists, which was found in his pocket when he killed himself in Fort Marcy Park outside Washington, D.C. in 1993.

"I did not see a suicide coming, yet when I was told that Vince was dead I knew that he had killed himself," she writes. "Never for a minute have I doubted that was what happened."

Anthony said her family has suffered "untold pain" over the years as the rumors contintued. She noted that multiple investigations have shown Foster took his own life.

Anothony admitted she has donated money to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, but said she has had no contact with anyone from her campaign about her decision to go public. She said the made the decision to do so after the Post asked her for reaction to Trump's comments.

"For Trump to raise these theories again for political advantage is wrong," she said. "I cannot let such craven behavior pass without a response."
