Vice President Mike Pence, heading the White House delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea this week, won't allow North Korea's "propaganda" to "hijack the messaging" at the games, Axios reported Sunday.

"The vice president will remind the world that everything the North Koreans do at the Olympics is a charade to cover up the fact that they are the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet," an unnamed aide to the vice president told Axios.

"At every opportunity, the [vice president] will point out the reality of the oppression in North Korea by a regime that has enslaved its people," the aide added. "We will not allow North Korea's propaganda to hijack the messaging of the Olympics."

The aide also said, "We are seeing an unprecedented level of international cooperation on the maximum pressure strategy targeting the Kim [Jong Un] regime, and the vice president will make clear that this maximum pressure campaign will only intensify."

Another unnamed source told Axios North Korea "wants to make this about cute photo ops."

"The vice president is countering North Korea's desire to control the message," the second source said, adding, "We're not going to cede two weeks of world media to North Korea."

Pence leaves for Asia midday Monday and returns next weekend, after stops in Japan and at the Olympics, for the Opening Ceremony and some first-day events.

According to CNN, North Korea is aiming to show off dozens of long-range missiles at a Feb. 8 parade, the day before the Winter Olympics begin.

The display of "hundreds" of missiles and rockets would be an attempt "to scare the hell out of the Americans," one unnamed source told CNN.
