The Uvalde, Texas, elementary school where 19 students and two teachers were shot and killed will be demolished, Mayor Don McLaughlin said at a recent city council meeting.

McLaughlin said that following a meeting he had with Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Hal Harrell, his "understanding" is that Robb Elementary School will be demolished, though he did not specify a date.

"You can never ask a child to go back or teacher to go back in that school ever," McLaughlin said at the meeting.

Harrell previously announced that the students enrolled at the school, which currently amount to close to 600, would not return to the building for classes.

The Washington Examiner notes that Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, was demolished 10 months after 27 people, including 20 children, were shot and killed in a mass shooting in 2012. A new school, which opened in 2016, was built in a different section of the same property.
