The renegotiation of NAFTA was a "bruising process" for Canada and "a win" for the United States, but the United States Mexico and Canada Agreement on trade (USMCA) provides an "opportunity" for the three countries to challenge China's dominance, Stephen Harper, the former Prime Minister of Canada, told Newsmax TV.
"It's unequivocally a win for the United States," Harper, Prime Minister of Canada from 2006-2011, told Tuesday's "Newsmax Now," pointing to American gains on autos from Mexico and dairy and poultry sectors from Canada.
"Obviously, from a Canadian standpoint, the agreement is not as positive. Everyone would agree with that, but nevertheless, guaranteed access to the American market is still the single most important trade agreement that Canada has."

Harper, whose book "Right Here, Right Now: Politics and Leadership in the Age of Disruption" was released Tuesday, said there is an opportunity in the USMCA for the three countries to work together to challenge China.
"If you look at the agreement, it provides pretty strong incentives for Canada and Mexico to work with the United States on trying to open up the Chinese market, dealing with the massive structural imbalances that we have in Chinese trade between our countries," Harper added to host John Bachman.
"I actually think this is a real opportunity for Canada and Mexico to fix a problem, or work on a problem we all share."
