Five Republican members of Congress on Thursday called for the inspectors general of government departments dealing with national security to investigate whether their agencies are being influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood via its “civilization jihad.”
This initiative holds out hope that a grave, and largely unremarked, threat may thus be recognized and thwarted in time.
The letters were signed by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee; Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, chairman of the House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on the Constitution and a member of the House Armed Services Committee; and Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
Also signing were Florida Rep. Tom Rooney, deputy majority whip and member of the House Armed Services Committee; and Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee.
The letters were sent to the IG’s of the Departments of State, Justice, Defense, Homeland Security, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The members in a statement expressed concern about the dangers posed by the Muslim Brotherhood and the need to understand that threat in the United States.
They also cited evidence of the penetration of the organization’s operatives and allies inside the administration of President Barack Obama and examples of policies that appear to have been influenced as a result.
