More than 33,000 organ transplants were performed in the United States last year, marking the fourth straight year the figure has set a record.

CNN cites data from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) that shows the record number of transplants in 2016 — 33,606 — were an 8.5 percent increase from 2015's number of about 30,900.

Since 2012, the number of organ transplants performed in the U.S. has jumped up by 19.8 percent.

"Thousands more men, women and children are receiving a life-saving transplant opportunity each year," said Stuart Sweet, M.D., Ph.D., president of the OPTN/UNOS board of directors. "We are deeply grateful to all who have chosen to help others through the life-saving act of organ donation. We are also very conscious that many more people are still anxiously awaiting a transplant, so we must continue to work with our partners in the donation and transplant community to meet the needs of those who continue to wait."

A closer look at the numbers reveals the number of deceased organ donors rose by 9.2 percent from 2015 to 2016, marking the sixth consecutive year that number has increased. Eighty-two percent, or 27,628, of the transplants performed in 2016 used organs from deceased donors.

"Organ transplantation has long been at the forefront of data-driven quality improvement, and OPOs and UNOS are working together on a technology-driven transformation in the way organ donors are identified and recovered," UNOS CEO Brian Shepard said.

Slate, meanwhile, published a story two weeks ago that surmised self-driving cars intended to reduce collision statistics could ultimately lead to less organs being donated because there will be fewer highway deaths and, therefore, fewer organs to harvest.
