New York City police said Friday they are looking at a "credible" rape allegation regarding disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and are building a criminal case against him.

Actress Paz de la Huerta accused Weinstein of raping her twice in 2010. She called police about the matter Oct. 26.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Huerta's story seems credible because she was able to "articulate each and every minute of the crime, where she was, where they met, where this happened, and what he did."

The "Boardwalk Empire" actress said Weinstein committed the crimes at her apartment in October and December 2010.

Boyce said if the crime had occurred more recently, Weinstein would have already been arrested.

"If this person was still in new York, and it was recent, we'd go right away and make the arrest. No doubt," he said. "But we're talking about a 7-year-old case. And we have to move forward gathering evidence first."

Huerta gave a graphic account of what she alleges Weinstein did during an interview with Vanity Fair published this week.

Several women have come forward and accused Weinstein of either sexual harassment or sexual assault, including rape. Days after the first reports became public, he was fired from the production company he founded and that bears his name.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating at least two rape allegations against him. Authorities in Beverly Hills and London are also looking at allegations of sexual misconduct involving Weinstein.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
