Clinton: Fears of Libyan 'unspeakable Atrocities'

Saturday, 19 March 2011 01:28 PM EDT

PARIS (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. will bring "unique capabilities to bear" in Libya as a global coalition begins enforcing a U.N.-authorized no-fly zone to protect civilians from Moammar Gadhafi's forces.

She said at a news conference in Paris after an international meeting on Libya that the U.S. will support "all necessary measures" to put the U.N. Security Council resolution into place.

She made clear that the U.S. has no intention of sending ground troops into Libya.

Clinton says Gadhafi's government has lost all legitimacy and that what's happening on the ground in the North African nation tell a different story from Gadhafi's claims of a cease-fire.

Clinton says that "we have every reason to fear that left unchecked, Gadhafi will commit unspeakable atrocities."
