Thousands of U.S. flights have been canceled by the winter storm tearing through the East Coast, with over 4,600 flights scrapped while the number of delayed flights climbed past the 2,000 mark.

The massive storm halted operations at some of the nation's busiest airports, resulting in over 4,000 flights cancelled on Thursday, with 614 flights scheduled for Friday wiped as delays continued to stack up, CNBC noted.

Travel hubs along the East Coast suffered in the wake of the storm, with CNN reporting New York's LaGuardia and JFK International airports officially closed on Thursday, although operations have since recommenced.

Islip's Long Island MacArthur Airport was forced to cancel all inbound flights for Thursday but hoped to re-open midmorning on Friday.

Newark Liberty canceled around 70 percent of its flights on Thursday and cautioned passengers to check with their carriers about their flights as delays could be expected.

Meanwhile American Airlines had to suspend all departures from Boston on Thursday, CNN noted.

Boston Logan International Airport took a hard hit, with around 700 flights canceled due to the storm, Time noted, and Massport Director of Aviation Ed Freni has gone as far as to advise travelers to avoid the airport for the time being.

Flights in and out of Charleston International Airport in North Carolina were also canceled due to snow and ice cover, CNN reported, while American, Delta, Southwest and United have warned passengers to expect long delays and cancellations at other airports across the country.
