A U.S. Air Force B-52H Strategic Bomber was intercepted by a Russian Su-35 fighter aircraft on Monday over the Baltic Sea.
The B-52 was approaching Russian airspace when it was intercepted, according to Russia’s Ministry of Defense. It was then escorted until it entered Estonian Airspace.
The Polish Ministry of Defense said that the bomber was escorted by Polish F-16s at one point, however it is likely that the bomber was intercepted by the Russian Su-35 after the Polish jets returned to base.
This comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a summit in Moscow, and a week after Russian jets downed a U.S. surveillance drone for flying “provocatively” close to Russian air space.
