The Army is training thousands of additional soldiers in tunnel warfare and is buying more specialized gear needed for such operations in order to be ready to present President Donald Trump with military options for a potential conflict with North Korea, NPR reported on Tuesday.

North Korea has thousands of tunnels and bunkers, some of them hundreds of feet deep that could be used to hide troops and artillery, as well as weapons of mass destruction.

Although the Army usually trains one or two brigades in tunnel warfare for use in such locations as Afghanistan, U.S. officials said an unspecified additional number of brigades are doing the training this year in anticipation of potential conflict with North Korea as well over its disputed continued development of its nuclear program.

Those tunnels are safe from most missiles and bombs dropped by aircraft or fired from the sea, and any military action against Pyongyang would necessitate American and South Korean troops attacking those tunnels, officials said.

The Army's increased training for tunnel warfare also comes on the heels of an announcement last month by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency that it launched a new grand challenge in search of new technology to map, navigate, and search underground, according to Defense One.

North Korea reportedly has between 6,000 and 8,000 underground facilities including an 1,800-meter underground runway to launch planes.

As part of the preparations, Stars & Stripes reported that soldiers recently used high-tech communications and night-vision gear to attack a bunker to simulate a chemical weapons lab at a semi-abandoned base north of Seoul.

In that exercise, the soldiers had to navigate through a half-mile long, horseshoe-shaped tunnel and numerous alcoves that appeared like the kind of places an enemy might hide chemical weapons.
