Sen. Chambliss to Obama: Release Classified Information on Downed Plane in Ukraine

By    |   Wednesday, 23 July 2014 11:46 AM EDT

President Barack Obama needed to release classified information the United States has that could indicate who shot the missile that downed Malaysian Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine that killed 298 people, said Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

The evidence needed to be "forthcoming," Chambliss told MSNBC's "Morning Joe," since all that had been revealed so far was information publically available from social media.

"Number one is to release the classified information. There's no reason not to," the Georgia Republican said Wednesday. "There's obviously a lot of evidence pointing to the Russians, some of it circumstantial. But, frankly, some of it's pretty direct."

Chambliss indicated that "at the end of the day," he expected all of the information on the downed jetliner to be released. He predicted the evidence would point to Russian President Vladimir Putin as the one who bore responsibility for the incident.

"Whether it was the Russians themselves that pulled the trigger or Russian separatists trained by Russians, it's all in the same. And, it all goes back ultimately to Vladimir Putin," he said.

President Barack Obama was "going to have to lead on this issue" to encourage Europeans to follow in responding to the attack on the passenger airliner, Chambliss said, adding that he was confident the European people could "force their leaders to get on board in a much stronger way."
