Twitter is testing a 280-character splurge for users to tweet out longer messages and is using a small group of selected testers to make sure the extra digits work for the “community.” Relax, President Donald Trump was specifically excluded.

The social media site, which now limits tweets to 140 characters or less, announced on Tuesday it would be trying out the longer limit only among the small group of testers.

Trying to cram an important message into a Tweet can be painful, the online networking firm acknowledged in a Twitter blogpost revealing the test.

“I quickly run into the 140 character limit and have to edit my tweet down so it fits,” Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen said. “Sometimes, I have to remove a word that conveys an important meaning or emotion, or I don’t send my tweet at all. Which is why Twitter is looking at extending the character limit of tweets.”

Only the testers will be able to use the 280-character tweet before the firm makes a decision on whether to launch it.

“What matters most is that this works for our community – we will be collecting data and gathering feedback along the way,” Rosen said.

Twitter's founder Jack Dorsey was one of the first to try out the new 280-character limit by posting how the 140 character limit “was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit.”

He added “this is a small change, but a big move for us.”

However, as the BBC News noted, not everyone was on board.

Many users felt a 280 character limit was too long for the social media site, while others were concerned that public figures such as Trump, renowned for his prolific tweets, would be included in the test group.

Recode approached Twitter with the concerns about Trump and was told via a spokesperson that the test group would be selected at random and it could not be confirmed whether Trump would be included.

However, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in a tweet on Tuesday that the president would not be in the test group.
